What Should My Child Be Eating For Optimal Health?

Understanding healthy eating has become a huge challenge in our society. Our ancestors living thousands of years ago did not have this challenge. They ate what grew and what they could catch. Before the advent of agriculture, people ate what was naturally supplied.

While I have been studying nutrition for 46 years, I am not an expert, since I am not a scientist and have not done my own research. What I share with you comes from my personal experience with my children and grandchildren.

Rather than laying out a specific way of eating, I am going to write about what I have learned about what NOT to eat.

Below is a partial list of things not to feed your children:

Sugar

Corn syrup

Glucose syrup

Wheat syrup

Rice syrup

Potato starch

Modified food starch

White foods - white bread, white rice, rice milk, white pastas, white wheat flour

Processed grains

French fries

Sodas

Trans-fats

Vegetable oils other than coconut and olive oil

Preservatives and food colorings - or anything that you can't pronounce!

You might not think you are feeding your children many of these, but if you look at the labels, you will find many of these non-foods in packaged and refined products. In fact, most refined foods will contain one or more of these items.

For your children to be healthy, they have to be eating foods that are nutrient dense. Not only do none of the above items have any nutrient value, they rob the body of nutrients, creating the weight and health problems that are endemic to our society.

What are the nutrient-dense foods? The most nutrient dense foods are organically grown vegetables. Next are fruits, followed by beans, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds - in moderation. If you are not a vegetarian, highly nutritious forms of animal protein are organically fed grass-finished beef and lamb (grain-finishing beef and lamb changes the composition of the fat and causes many health problems), free-range organic poultry, and organic free-range eggs. Mercury-free fish is very healthy, as the oil provides the important omega-3s.

Regarding dairy products: pasteurization kills the enzymes in dairy and can cause problems such as asthma and allergies. Pasteurization also causes milk and other dairy to become difficult to digest, also contributing to illness. Unless you can get very clean, raw organic milk and cheese from grass-finished cows, it is better to avoid dairy. Due to the difficulties in absorption of pasteurized dairy, it is not a good source of calcium - despite what the dairy industry claims. My children were brought up on raw Alta-Dena dairy products and did very well on them.

The right kinds of fats are also important. Coconut oil is the best to cook with and olive oil is the best in salad dressings.

How do get your children to eat like this? The only way I know of, which is what I did when my three children were growing up, is to eat this way yourself. I chose not to have anything in the house that I didn't want them to eat, so everything they ate was healthy while they were in the house. I never insisted that they eat. I just put the healthy food out and they ate as much or as little as they wanted to eat.

It is also important to determine you own and your children's metabolic type, which you can do by reading William Wolcott's "The Metabolic Typing Diet." This will help you to know if your child does better on animal protein or vegetable protein. While it is important to have healthy choices in the house, it is equally important not to insist that your child eat the way you do. You might be a rapid metabolizer who needs a lot of meat, while your child might be a slow metabolizer who needs more vegetable protein.

If you want to be healthy and have healthy children, the very best thing to do is read as much as you can about healthy eating, and then decide for yourself what you want to do for your family.

Children's Health – a Channel to Success

Children are the seeds that we plant today and as time goes by they will be trees that will serve as the foundation of tomorrow. They will be the future-builders of the coming generation, but then it will take a long time before it happens so we must give them the best things in this world, not actually to spoil them, but to nurture their minds and to kill their folly by means of proper education and good living.

The best things that we can give to the children do not assure that they will be exactly the same as what we are thinking right now. Remember they are humans prone to mistakes. That is why we need to guide them step by step as they go through life. They still need guardians that will help them to point the right direction every time they are in crossroads. But time will come they will be standing on their own, all alone facing the trials, surpassing every obstacles in their way, and making decisions for their own selves. So before it happens we must make them as strong as the bamboo that no matter how hard and strong the typhoon is they can easily go with the flow of it.

Nowadays, there are non-governmental organizations that are concerned on how to give the children around the world the life they really deserve to have. Yes, the children maybe the new hopes of the coming generation and they may be the channel to success, but if they are not given the proper care, love, and attention, all the things you are dreaming for them will be just a dream forever. That is why these NGO’s are to the rescue to save the future of these children by means of charitable programs that will help the children especially in deprived communities to get a brighter future. Usually they conduct medical missions that have the primary concerned on children’s health and other programs will promote children’s welfare. They are doing such kind acts because they believe that a healthy child has a healthy and brighter future.

Through the programs on improving children’s health and other children-related programs by these non-governmental organizations, it is not hard to imagine that the children of today can be the channel of success for tomorrow. Let us just cultivate these seeds for they will be beautiful seedlings and then they will turn into stunning trees.

Trans fats are artificially produced fats that are very unhealthy. The consumption of trans fats is one of the main causes for the current obesity epidemic. Trans fats are used in thousands of food products. www.naturalnews.com The health risks of trans fats include hart disease, obesity, cancer, clogged arteries, high cholesterol, diabetes, birth defects, allergies in children, etc. Food manufactures use (partially) hydrogenated oils because it increases the shelf life of their products. This means less spoilage, less loss and therefore more profit! In addition, products with trans fat tend to taste quite good. Trans fats are used in fast food, chips, baked goods, french fries, etc. Trans fats are produced through the hydrogenation of vegetable oils such as sunflower and soybean oil. During this chemical process hydrogen molecules are added to the oil molecules and the oil becomes solid as is the case with margarine. When consuming natural fats, it takes the body 18 days to metabolize half of them. When consuming trans fats, it takes the body 51 days to metabolize half of them. This means that half of the trans fats you eat will still be in your body 51 days later! No wonder obesity has become such an epidemic. www.becomehealthynow.com Food products will contain trans fat if they include any of the following ingredients: (partially) hydrogenated oil or fat, shortening, margarine. Butter also contains a small amount of natural trans fat. This is not as harmful as the man ...

Republicans Try to Hinder Children’s Health Bill

Republicans Try to Hinder Children’s Health Bill

In America, Barack Obama’s plans to extend health insurance have been met with some opposition by Republican lawmakers.

The Republican’s have been attempting to slow the proposal from materialising by arguing that a bill in the Senate would draw around 2.4 million away from private health insurance onto government – sponsored coverage.

Overall, the Senate legislation would increase spending by .5 billion over the next 4 ½ years. The expansion would be paid for by increasing the federal excise tax and tobacco products.

However, Sen. Jon Kyl said that the plan does not do enough to limit the State Children’s Health Insurance Programme to low-income families.

Kyl noted that around a third of those who gain insurance as a result of the bill would otherwise have access to private health insurance. He stated: “We're going to replace a lot of private insurance with government insurance.”

Sen. Richard Durbin, responded to the critics that those arguing the scheme were too generous to middle-income families  and are “really out of touch with what these families face.”

Helping those achieve health insurance

SCHIP was founded in 1997, and is a federal-state partnership for families who financially have too much to qualify for Medicaid but struggle to afford private medical insurance.

States have broad flexibility to determine desirable candidates, and Republicans say states like New York and New Jersey are broadening the program to families with incomes that exceed the need for government assistance.

Although the Republican’s strength is their opinions, their weakness is their numbers, as they lack the votes to block the legislation as Democrats have reinforced their majorities in Congress.

Therefore, the Senate and House members will have to work out the difference in the legislation, before Barack Obama can sign the bill.

The House passed a comparable bill nearly two weeks ago by a vote of 289-129. Forty Republican’s voted in favour to the measure.

What Barack Obama is advocating is new to America. In 2007, former President George W. Bush twice vetoed Democratic-led bills to expand children’s health insurance cover. Obama has said he hopes the Senate will act with urgency so the new bill can be reauthorized and expanded.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid commented on Bush’s decision to ban an expansion: “Jeopardizing the health of American children is not a political victory for anyone. It's a loss for everyone. It's long past time that we corrected it.”

Sen. Max Baucus is also a supporter of SCHIP by stating that the number of uninsured children has been cut by a third due to the programme and claims that the new bill would mean families with higher incomes would get less funding from the federal government than they would normally get via SCHIP.

To pay for the plan’s expansion, lawmakers have proposed increasing the federal excise tax on a pack of cigarettes to . That is a 61 cent increase. Baucus said this will be a plus: “Increasing the cigarette tax will discourage smoking, particularly among teens. And that will be good for kids, too.”

States Can Opt Out of Public Option Health Insurance Plans

States Can Opt Out of Public Option Health Insurance Plans

There has been much speculation over the possible inclusion of a public option in the healthcare reform bill. Despite the controversy, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid plans to ensure that a government-run health insurance program, intended to compete with private health insurance plans, is included--but there's a catch. The new provision allows states to pass legislation that excludes them from the public option. With this strategy, Democrats in both chambers of Congress are forgoing support from any of the Republicans--although only one, Maine Senator Olympia Snowe, expressed willingness to vote for any version of health care reform with some type of public option (albeit one that first had to be "triggered"). However, it will probably secure the votes of some conservative and moderate Democrats who have been unsure of the public option. However, does this version of the public option defeat the purpose of the public option, and will it meet the goals of its liberal supporters?

The irony inherent in this rule is that while it is more likely to pass, it may be less effective in insuring the most Americans. The strongest opponents of the public option are Republican politicians representing so-called "red states". Their concerns include the virtual guarantee that reform will add to the nation's budget deficit, in addition to ideological objections to the concept of health insurance plans provided by the government. Meanwhile, the Census Bureau has found that staunchly Republican states (defined as those that have two Republican Senators and voted for John McCain in the 2008 election) generally have higher populations of the uninsured than either "purple states" that don't consistently vote for either party or Democratic "blue states". For example, "blue state" children in Massachusetts were eight times more likely to be insured than children in "red" Texas. While it appears illogical that legislators would ignore the pressing concerns of children and adults under 65 without insurance, it turns out that the Congressional districts with the most uninsured are represented by largely unchallenged Democratic representatives, not to mention predominately populated by minorities. Republican-leaning states are still, on average, less insured after these skewed districts removed from the statistics.

Why would this be the case? It's possible that even though a significant percentage of their constituents are uninsured, a majority of Republican voters in these states are happy with their existing health insurance plans and see no need to change the current system. Different governing philosophies are part of the cause of this disparity in the first place. Democratic state governments are more likely to have expanded Medicaid to more individuals, increasing income limits to include people who are working at jobs that don't offer health insurance or wages high enough to buy individual health insurance on the open market. These states have also enacted comprehensive children's health insurance plans, important as almost 10% are uninsured in America. If state legislatures are allowed to pass laws opting out of the federal public option, this scenario is unlikely to change. President Obama and progressive organizations have expressed support for Reid's proposal, no doubt justifying it by saying that the perfect is the enemy of the good--but is this actually good, or the worst of both worlds? It remains to be seen if they consider a greater chance of legislative victory worth failing to meet their mission of insuring as many Americans as possible.
